About This Project

The Four Humours was a monumental-scale confession booth and prognosticator, made possible via projection mapping, a custom piece of software, and a unique interface. This computational artwork was designed specifically for the SEEK Festival at Dorothea Dix Park, with an installation site at the “3 Silos” location.

The tanks served as giant projected containers of secrets, confessions, perspectives, identities, worries and other emotions.

A visitor approached the installation and captured a video of their face in the “confession booth” box.  Their disembodied head become an animated part of the art installation and was added to a database of all visitors who experienced the piece, who become a persistent community in the work.

The Four Humours suggests a bit about the randomness of fate, and people’s mental health and sense of chemical balance.  It also alludes to the history of the Dorothea Dix Hospital, which served as the state psychiatric hospital for more than 150 years.
